Tears of a Machine on Kickstarter now!

The Kickstarter campaign for Russell Collins’ Tears of a Machine role-playing game is live!

Tears of a Machine, a “Mecha-Drama” rpg exploring the self-worth of teenage pilots struggling to control giant robots and protect the Earth, will be of particular interest for fans of the anime and manga that inspired it (e.g., Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fafner), but any gamer who loves robots, action or high drama may find something to love here.

The game will feature full-color illustrations by yours truly, graphic design and layout by rockstar game designer Nathan Paoletta, and editing by the fabulous J.R. Blackwell. The four of us make a great team. Help us bring this great project to life.

Funding will support not only digital and physical copies of the book, but limited edition “ID cards,” art prints, and accessibility for the blind and gamers with learning differences.

See the official campaign page for information about the game and backer rewards. If you like what you see, your support would be very appreciated!

Velociraptor! Cannibalism! Nominated for Award!

The title just about covers it. Yesterday, the Board Raptor Games team was delighted to hear that Velociraptor! Cannibalism! has been nominated for Indie Game of the Year by the Philly Geek Awards! We are thrilled.

For those of you unfamiliar with V!C!, a team of six game designers (including myself) who’d never met before came together during Philly’s 2012 Global Game Jam and made a bizarre, silly, unique, and clever little board game about dinosaurs mutating in hilarious ways and eating each other; all in 48 hours. We were really excited by the game, our team’s dynamics, and the game’s reception by the other jammers. It was decided that very first night. We were Kickstarting this thing and getting it out there for other gamers to enjoy.

Velociraptor! Cannibalism! blew. Up. Our campaign raised over 1000% of our funding goal and it soon became clear that we weren’t just finishing up our Game Jam version of the game. We were delivering it to a thousand backers, finding a publisher, getting it in stores, polishing it up to a product worth sitting on the shelf. This thing is going somewhere.*

I worked very hard on producing the final version of this game. Creating over 200 illustrations, art-direction, editing, communications with publishers and printers and anything else needed to get V!C! to print. It was difficult, but the game is one of my proudest accomplishments and, whether we win or not, it’s immensely satisfying to see this kind of recognition.

Thank you, Geekadelphia. This means a lot. See you in August.

* Velociraptor! Cannibalism! will be published by Game Salute and is currently in production in China. News on the release date, price point and other fun stuff coming soon. If you’re not a Kickstarter backer, keep an eye on the game’s official Facebook for updates.

The Firefly RPG

fireflyrpgLooks like my esteemed colleague Daniel Solis has made it public! I’m working on the new Firefly RPG, coming soon from Margaret Weis Productions!

I’ve been working hard watching and rewatching all of the source material and planning out my setting details and compositions. Lots of people will be paying attention to these, so I’d better make them good, right? No pressure.

Speaking of fantastic art: If you’re interested in the game, see this link for a sweet pre-order deal that also benefits the many artists needed to bring this game to life. Win-win.

By the way, sorry for the delay in cleaning up my portfolio pages. How embarrassing! I’ll do my very best to take care of that soon.
